Geography could be dropped as subject in 900 Hungarian high schools

Initiatives

The new so-called “vocational high schools”, which prepare students to become skilled workers, will have a condensed science curriculum and geography would be dropped as a standalone subject, the online version of weekly HVG reported yesterday.

The Hungarian Geography Society is collecting signatures in a petition against the move, noting that geography is an important subject and that hundreds of teachers would be without a job if the move went ahead.

Under a proposal submitted by the Human Resources Ministry, with the reform of high school-level education in Hungary, general education subjects are to be further streamlined at the type of institutions where vocational instruction is present, HVG reports.

Students would be taught only the branch of science that “more or less links to the vocation they are studying”, according to HVG. For example, engineers would only learn physics, health-care students only biology, tourism students would have only geography and catering students foreign languages as their core subjects. The move would reportedly banish geography from 900 high schools nationwide.

Educational experts told HVG it is a very bad decision to make students decide at the age of 14, when they choose which high school to attend, which science course they can have.
