GE eyes turbine contract for Paks upgrade
GE Steam Power Systems has a good chance of winning a contract to supply the turbines for the upgrade of Hungaryʼs sole nuclear power plant in Paks, commercial director Michael Keroulle told Hungarian news agency MTI.
Construction of the turbine island is expected to account for EUR 3 billion of the EUR 10-12 bln cost of the upgrade, with the turbines, generators and other equipment adding up to EUR 1 bln, the news agency quoted Keroulle as saying..
GE Steam Power Systems already supplies turbines to a nuclear power plant in Finland that is of similar design to Paks II and is being built by the same general contractor, Russiaʼs Rosatom, he noted.
GE’s vice chairman John G. Rice announced the company was considering participating as a supplier in the Paks nuclear power plant expansion while he was conducting talks in Veresegyháza, northeast of Budapest, in January. He said then the Hungarian government and GE share goals in education, competitiveness, capacity development and export expansion. He noted that exports accounted for 99% of GE Magyarországʼs revenue of HUF 1.524 trillion in 2014.
