Deutsch to propose lowering VAT on internet usage to 18%
Value added tax (VAT) on internet usage should be lowered to 18% from the current 27%, Tamás Deutsch (pictured), an MEP with the governing party Fidesz, suggested in an interview posted by Hungarian online daily inforadio.hu on Saturday.

“We will put concrete proposals on the government’s table by mid-November,” said Deutsch, who is the prime ministerʼs commissioner for a national consultation on digital development, Internetkon. The politician said he would make the proposal based on the answers received by the national consultation on the internet.
According to Deutsch, the Hungarian government must naturally decide on the financial as well as the political viability of such a measure.
Another proposal Deutsch is planning to make would provide basic internet packages at preferential rates to underprivileged Hungarians. However, he added, it is “still a matter of question” as to what criteria eligibility for the subsidy would be based on.
