Construction of a new congress center in the capital to accommodate 4,000 visitors could begin in 2017, deputy state secretary for tourism Ádám Ruszinkó said today, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.

The government will discuss the concept for the center this spring and plans could be finalized by the end of the year. Construction could start in 2017 and the center could be inaugurated around the end of 2018, said Ruszinkó.

Ruszinkó said work on a national tourism development strategy for 2016-2026 is still in progress. The government may discuss the plan in March, following consultations with industry experts.

The capacity of the largest hall at Budapestʼs existing congress center is 2,000 sqm.

Conference tourism drew more than 414,000 people to Hungary in 2014, according to the latest data from the state tourism agency Magyar Turizmus.
