Bank card purchases rise 22% in Q1

The number of domestic purchases made by Hungarians with bank cards in the first quarter rose 22% year-on-year, reaching almost 108 million, data released by the National Bank of Hungary (MNB) yesterday show, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.

The value of the purchases climbed 31%, reaching HUF 757 billion.

During the same period, the number of cash withdrawals made by Hungarians edged down 2% to 24 million. The withdrawals amounted to HUF 1.535 trillion in cash, unchanged from the same period a year earlier.

Hungarians used their bank cards to make purchases abroad eight million times in Q1, up 33% from the same period a year earlier.

The number of points of sale accepting bank cards at brick-and-mortar businesses rose 8% to 83,500 during the period.

The number of ATMs edged up 1% to 4,840.
