Approximately 30% of Hungaryʼs strawberry crop was destroyed by freezing weather in late April, Ferenc Lédó of Fruit & Vegetable Producer Organization said today, according to a report by Hungarian online daily origo.hu.

In Somogy county, which is home to the majority of Hungarian strawberry fields, approximately 60-80% of the crop may have been harmed by freezing weather, the professional said, adding that this could lift prices this season.

Lédó said that apart from cheaper Spanish and Italian imports, more expensive Hungarian strawberries grown in greenhouses are also present on the market. If there is less rainfall in the coming weeks, field-grown strawberries could appear on the Hungarian market as well, and push prices down, the professional added.
