One million passengers travelled through Budapest Airport last month, making it the busiest May on record for the airport, which hit the milestone two months earlier than last year, according to a press release posted on Budapest Airportʼs official website bud.hu yesterday.

The growth was driven primarily by the launch of a number of new routes in the first half of 2016. Additionally, eight of Budapestʼs largest carriers registered their highest number of passengers in May and over 25% year-on-year growth including: Wizz Air, British Airways, Norwegian and airberlin, the press release noted. The May figures were also boosted by the success of long-haul routes and figures could improve further with new routes from Air Canada Rouge and Asiana Airlines, according to bud.hu.

“Reaching yet another momentous threshold, and so early in the year, is a tremendous achievement for us and a direct result of our commitment to increase our choice of passenger connectivity,” said CEO, Budapest Airport, Jost Lammers, adding that with such milestones reached earlier than usual, 2016 is expected to be a record breaking year, according to the press release.
