Hungarian energy firm Veolia Energia Magyarország Zrt. purchased its peer Bioenergia Művek Energiatermelő (DBM) Zrt., which operates Hungary’s fourth biggest biomass energy plant in Szakoly, according to a press release issued today. The Hungarian Competition Authority reportedly approved the transaction.

Veolia aims to make the plant sustainable in the long-term, saying that by achieving a 19.8 MW performance, the facility could effectively contribute to Hungary’s energy targets, the press statement said.

The plant, which was built in 2009, currently employs a staff of 55. Annually 140,000-150,000 tons of wooden pellets are burnt, and the energy created is passed into the country-wide energy network, the press release said.

“Veolia Energia Magyarország Zrt. has been in the lead of Hungary’s renewable energy production … and now can further strengthen its position in the Central Hungarian region as well,” said György Palkó, Veolia Chairman-CEO.
