Tesco Hungary selling only Hungarian watermelons
The Hungarian subsidiary of U.K. retail giant Tesco is selling only watermelons grown by Hungarian farmers in its commitment to Hungarian suppliers, the company said in a press release today.
Under a long-term agreement, Tesco is able to pay a competitive price to harvesters, while providing “favorable” prices for its customers, of HUF 129 per kilogram for watermelon and HUF 199 per kilogram for cantaloupe, the press release adds.
Last year Tesco sold approximately 5 million kilograms of watermelon grown in the country, and Tesco expects this number to exceed 7-7.5 million kilograms. Tesco is planning to export 5 million kilograms of cantaloupe to Slovakia, Czech Republic and Poland.
