The Hungarian National Tax and Customs Authority (NAV) levied a total fine of approximately HUF 3.6 million on Uber drivers, which the authority deemed have operated illegally since the beginning of the year, NAV told Hungarian news agency MTI today.

Out of approximately 250 Uber drivers checked by NAV officials, 20 Uber drivers have been found to operate without tax numbers, and authorities have confiscated the number plates of four drivers, MTI reported.

Since late April, the checks are being carried out with the cooperation of the police and the Budapest Public Transport Center (BKK), MTI said.

Scrutiny of Uber drivers in the capital has increased since the beginning of the year, following half a dozen demonstrations this year by taxi drivers against the services of Uber. The government is planning to discuss changes to related laws, which could practically ban the provision of services such as Uber.
