State secretary: Government wants Uber to ‘line up’

The Hungarian government does not want to ban the operations of U.S.-based ride-sharing application Uber in Hungary, but would like the company to “line up”, in other words adhere to regulations that allow for fair competition, state secretary János Fónagy said yesterday, following negotiations with Uber’s Hungarian representatives.
The state secretary said he had informed Uber that the government does not want to ban its service, nor is it against modern methods, online daily index.hu reported yesterday. Earlier reports suggested that the Hungarian government could even ban services like Uber if they do not follow the rules. Fónagy now says that the government simply wants to regulate the Hungarian operations of such services based on Hungarian laws.
According to reports, the Hungarian representatives of Uber stressed, during an almost two-hour-long negotiation, how modern and up-to-date their services are, while the state secretary claimed that such statements cannot be “used as a cover”, and that the company must apply to the relevant laws.
Earlier reports suggested that the changes the Hungarian government had made to relevant laws required Uber cars to operate much in the same way as taxis.
The Hungarian government introduced stricter regulations against the Hungarian operations of ride-sharing applications after taxis in Hungary demonstrated more than half a dozen times this year by restricting traffic along Budapestʼs main arteries. Taxi drivers claim that services such as Uber do not adhere to regulations, and can therefore offer cheaper fares.
