MÁV-Start, the passenger unit of Hungarian State Railways (MÁV), signed a contract with Swizterlandʼs Stadler Rail on the delivery of another 21 Flirt model multiple units on yesterday.

The trains, which cost €5.8 mln apiece, are being financed with European Union funding. The first six will be delivered by October and the rest by the end of next year. A little more than two years ago, Stadler won a tender called by MÁV-Start and regional railway GYSEV for the delivery of 42+6 multiple units.

MÁV-Start CEO György Zaránd said nine parties had bought the documentation for the latest train tender, invited in March, but just two had submitted bids. Stadler has invested HUF 16 bln-17 bln in Hungary since entering the country ten years ago, said Zoltan Dunai, country manager for Stadler Rail.

By the end of 2016, 133 Flirt multiple units will run on Hungaryʼs railway network, including 123 operated by MÁV-START and the rest by regional railway GYSEV, he added. Stadler employs 450 people in Hungary.
