Report: Hungarians tend to buy travel insurance at last minute

On average Hungarians spent HUF 540 forints a day on travel insurance last year when traveling out of country, on par with data available for 2014, online daily napi.hu reported today according to data compiled by online brokerage firm Netrisk.hu.

More than one third of Hungarians bought travel insurance policies online, while 80% of those purchased their policies in the last few days prior to their departure in the following breakdown: 25% 2-3 days prior to departure; 43% a day before their departure; and 12% on the day of departure.

Hungarians traveling on ski holidays spent 20% more, or HUF 650 in total, on travel insurance per day, which frequently provided additional insurance limits on ambulance services from ski runs, equipment insurance and accident insurance, the daily reported.

According to Netrisk.hu, 78% of Hungarians traveling on ski holidays bought travel insurance for trips to Austria while 6% bought insurance for both Slovakia and Italy and 3% bought insurance for ski trips to France. The remaining 7% bought travel insurance for ski trips to Slovenia, Poland, Romania and Switzerland. The average length of the above-mentioned trips was five days, the daily added.
