Power plant company Mátrai Erőmű laid the cornerstone of a HUF 6.5 bln solar power plant in Visonta, northern Hungary on Friday.

The 15 MW facility will be Hungaryʼs biggest solar power plant. Half of the investment costs will be covered by a development tax break, chairman of the companyʼs supervisory board Marie-Theres Thiell said at the ceremony.

Test operation of the plant, comprised of more than 72,000 solar panels on 30 hectares is expected to start at the end of August and last for one- and-a-half months, said Tibor Mikus, managing director of the plantʼs general contractor Wire-Vill. Mátrai Erőmű is Hungaryʼs biggest lignite-fueled power plant and has a capacity of 950 MW.
