Magyar Telekom launches career orientation program

Initiatives

The Hungarian unit of German telco giant Deutsche Telekom has launched a career orientation program in Hungary for secondary school students, with the aim of breaking down stereotypes in the IT sector and making it more attractive for young people who are in the process of choosing a career, Hungarian online daily origo.hu reported today.

The “Become an Information Technology expert” program has been in a pilot phase since last October, and has already involved over 1,800 students with the help of volunteers from Magyar Telekom (MTel), origo.hu reported. Due to the growing number of applications for the program, MTel expects interest to grow fast, origo.hu said. The firm is planning to extend the program to elementary school students as well.

The hope and goal of MTel is that by introducing this program through the education system, students will be more open to pursuing a career in Information Technology, said the companyʼs CEO Christopher Mattheisen, origo.hu reported.

According to Magyar Telekom, there are over 10,000 unfilled positions in the IT sector in Hungary, following a growing trend throughout Europe that has revealed a lack of IT experts. There are hundreds of thousands of unfilled positions in the sector across Europe, origo.hu reported. The reason for the shortage is the result of the younger generationʼs general disinterest in a career in IT, MTel says.
