Magyar Telekomʼs move to cancel its contract with Hungarian singer Ákos over his comments on women is essentially a “dictatorship of opinion”, Hungary’s Cabinet Chief János Lázár said yesterday at his regular weekly press conference, Hungarian online daily index.hu reported.

“I find what Telekom did incredible,” Lázár reportedly said, adding that the company “should not punish” Ákos for having opinions that differ from their own. He said that a German company “should know what dictatorship is” and that this is in fact a “dictatorship of opinion” according to the cabinet chief, index.hu reported.

He posed the question that “if the [Hungarian] government did not agree with Telekomʼs opinion on a specific topic, would it cancel all contracts with them [the company]?” index.hu quoted Lázár, who was presumably referring to contracts the Hungarian subsidiary of the German telco recently signed with the government.
