Wizz Air Carbon Emissions Kept Falling in 2023

Transport

Wizz Air's carbon emissions were 6.8% lower in 2023 than in 2022. The airline's average carbon emissions of 51.5 grams per passenger-kilometer is its lowest annual result ever.

In February last year, Wizz Air achieved its lowest-ever carbon emissions per passenger-kilometer for a month at 48.9 grams. The result represents an about 8.3% reduction compared to the same month in 2022.

The airline plans to reduce its carbon intensity by 25% by the end of the decade. As part of this strategy, Wizz Air has added 32 environmentally friendly Airbus A321neo aircraft to its fleet in 2023 alone. The average age of the fleet is 4.3 years, significantly lower than the European industry average of 10 years.

Wizz Air also aims to reduce its environmental footprint by using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The airline has agreements with manufacturers such as Neste and Cepsa. In 2023, the company invested GBP 5 million in U.K. biofuel producer Firefly and USD 50 million in U.S. biofuel startup CleanJoule. In May 2023, SAF was first tested on commercial flights at Budapest Airport using a 35% SAF blend.

In addition, last year, Wizz Air launched electric ground handling at Budapest and Rome Fiumicino airports, reducing its carbon emissions by 80-85% compared to diesel vehicles.
