The next stage of the development of the Southern Circular Railway began this week, the Ministry of Construction and Transport announced in a statement, according to profitline.hu.

The development will reconstruct the railway track, expanding it from two to three, and in some cases to four tracks. The aim is to increase the number of trains running between the capital and its surroundings, make rail a competitive alternative to autos as a sustainable means of transport, and give it a more significant role within Budapest's transport system.

The work can start after the investment received its environmental protection permit for the third time on Nov. 24 last year.

Under the Southern Circular Railway investment, the track between Ferencváros and Kelenföld stations will be renovated, a new Danube bridge will be built, and three new stops named Nádorkert, Közvágóhíd and Népliget will be added.
