A recently launched driver training program is expected to alleviate the labor shortage and strengthen the competitive position of private companies in the domestic road freight and passenger transport sector by increasing employment opportunities National Association of Private Road Haulage Contractors (NiT Hungary) and the Association of Hungarian Road Haulage Contractors (MKFE) say.

The key to dynamic sectoral development is a sufficiently skilled workforce, the organizations note in a press release.

The driver training program, launched this march March with a budget of HUF 1.7 billion could create the groundwork for the entry of around 1,000 Hungarian nationals into the labor market in the road freight and bus passenger transport sub-sector in less than one and a half years, according to expectations.

The organizations argue that with this kind of support for training, their long-standing career guidance activities can be successful and effective.

The program is eligible for a wide pool of participants, and it regards future employer transport companies as training partners. It also supports the learning and employment opportunities of the participants through appropriate pre-screening and mentoring by the OFA Nonprofit.

The associations note that the government is looking to strengthen the competitiveness of the logistics services and domestic road transport sector, with the declared aim of doubling the sector's contribution to GDP to 10% by 2030. Last year, domestic tourism came close to the performance of the last "peace year" before the pandemic, and the increased employment needs associated with this development are also evident in the public road services sector.
