Hungary will expand a combined public transport pass rolled out last spring and eliminate all other passes from March 1, Construction and Transport Minister János Lázár said at a press conference in Debrecen on Tuesday, according to state news wire MTI.

Lázár said a daily combined public transport pass good for unlimited travel by train or bus either in a single county or the whole country would be launched for travelers who don't want to buy monthly passes which have been available since May. The 24-hour combined public transport pass will cost HUF 999 for a county and HUF 4,999 for the whole country, he added.

Travelers with passes for the capital's public transport system are expected to be allowed to use state-owned MÁV trains and Volán buses as long as Budapest agrees to let combined public transport pass users ride on Budapest Public Transport Center (BKK) lines, he said.

Combined public transport passes now account for nine in ten sales of MÁV-Volán passes, MÁV said earlier. The full price for the monthly county pass is HUF 9,450 and the pass for the whole country is HUF 18,900.

Lázár said the number of travel discount categories would be reduced to 22 from 65 and discounts would be a uniform 50%. People over 65 and under 14 will travel free of charge, while those between the ages of 14 and 25 will get a 50% discount, he added.

People working in the public sector, including teachers and healthcare workers, will also get a 50% travel discount, he said.
