Slovakia Retail Trade Rebounds in January

Retail sales in Slovakia grew 1.9% year-on-year in January, recovering from a downwardly revised 3.7% drop in the previous month, data from the Bratislava-based Slovak Statistics Office (SÚSR) showed on Wednesday.

It marked the first growth in retail activity after a year of declines, as sales rebounded for non-specialized stores (1.6% vs -3.7% in December), food, beverages & tobacco in specialized stores (6.3% vs -13.1%), other household equipment in specialized stores (6.5% vs -14.7%), via stalls & market (8.1% vs -4.2%), and sales not in stores, stalls or markets (28.7% vs -13.3%).

Conversely, sales slowed for other goods in specialized stores (3% vs 5.7%), while decreases were noted in sales for ICT in specialized stores (-12.7% vs -16.3%), cultural & recreation goods in specialized stores (-11.5% vs 12.1%), and automotive fuel in specialized stores (-15.6% vs 8.5%).

On a monthly comparison basis, retail sales fell by 1%.
