Poland Retail Sales Rebound in January

Retail sales in Poland rose by 3% year-on-year in January, rebounding from a 2.3% drop in the previous month, data from the Central Statistical Office (GUS) showed on Thursday.

This marked the strongest growth since September 2022, as sales recovered sharply for solid, liquid & gaseous fuels (13.1% vs -6.4% in December 2023), newspapers & books (3.6% vs -8.3%), and others (18.9% vs -6.4%).

At the same time, sales accelerated for motorcycles & parts (22% vs 10.2%) and pharmaceuticals, cosmetics & orthopedic equipment (3.8% vs 2.2%), while it declined at a softer pace for food, beverages & tobacco (-0.6% vs -3.6%).

Conversely, sales decreased further for textiles, clothing & footwear (-24.7 vs -4.1%) and furniture & household appliances (-16.8% vs -11%). On a monthly basis, retail sales slumped 19.5% in January, reversing an 11% surge in the prior month.
