Hungary's government has approved a measure requiring supermarkets to inform consumers if food packaging is downsized, the National Economy Ministry said on Monday, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

The measure, in force from March 1, 2024, will require food retailers with annual revenue over HUF 1 bln to place signs next to products when packaging sizes or product volume is reduced, for a period of two months. The base period for unit volume will be between January 1, 2020, and July 1, 2023.

Producers and wholesalers will be required to inform supermarkets of changes in packaging volume.

Details of the measure will be published in the official gazette Magyar Közlöny soon, the ministry said.
