The University of Pécs is acquiring a cryogenic electron microscope and setting up a cryo-EM competency center at a cost of over HUF 5 billion in cooperation with pharmaceutical company Gedeon Richter, the school said on Friday, state news wire MTI reports.

The university has won HUF 5.1 bln in support for the investment which marks a "giant step" in Hungarian R&D, it said.

The equipment and competency center could support "breakthrough" research in the areas of structural chemistry, biochemistry, biology, biotechnology, material sciences and nanophysics, virology and pharmacology, and agricultural sciences, it added.

The center's activities will extend to applied as well as basic research, contributing to "significant economic and social benefits". The center's equipment will be available to other institutions of higher education as well as to industrial partners.
