Ikarus eyes production capacity expansion

In response to a government plan to support the local bus manufacturing industry, Hungarian busmaker Ikarus is planning to expand its annual production capacity to 3,000 buses, owner Gábor Széles told Hungarian daily Magyar Hírlap in an interview today.
With the necessary production facilities and machinery in place at its base in Székesfehérvár, Széles said the group is capable of exporting two buses for each one sold on the domestic market. He added that there is still demand for Ikarus buses on the company’s “traditional” export markets. The owner said that machinery for the expanded production should be operational by the end of September.
As a leading Hungarian businessman, Szélesʼ holdings include electronics manufacturer the Videoton group, pro-government television station Echo TV and Magyar Hírlap.
