Hungarian Tesco promises wage raise

The management of Hungarian Tesco and the associated workers’ unions are approaching an agreement on raising the wages of Tesco workers, following an earlier promise by Tesco to raise the wages of all its employees by 17%-22%, Hungarian online daily origo.hu reported.

The wage increase, which is scheduled for June or July, would apply to all Tesco employees, Csaba Bubenkó, head of the Retail Workers’ Independent Union KDFSZ, said, according to origo.hu.

The union is hoping that by the end of negotiations Tesco will agree to raise wages gradually, and provide the same wages for those employees who work in Budapest as those who work in the regional stores, origo.hu reported.

Bubenkó added that the supplemental wage for Sundays was not discussed at this time.

Earlier, the union asked Tesco to raise wages by 20% from April 1 and by a further 15% from September 1, however, Tesco was not willing to fulfil these requests, and workers were planning a strike as a result, according to reports.
