Hungarian state eyeing new national airline
The Hungarian government has expressed its intention to re-establish a national airline and is open to negotiations with any investor interested, Hungarian economic daily Napi Gazdaság reported today.
The government is seeking well-capitalized professionals or strategic investors and is planning to participate as a minority owner in the new carrier, the National Development Ministry told the paper on the third anniversary of the grounding of troubled Hungarian airline Malév.
In line with the ministry’s plans, the new airline could take a share of transit traffic or offer direct flights to destinations in the Western Balkans, Transylvania, North America or the Far East. “Budapest is geographically well located for becoming a hub for air travel” and the Liszt Ferenc International Airport has an unused capacity, the ministry added.
Asked about whether the state might buy back the airport, the ministry told Napi Gazdaság that it “sees no chance” of that happening.
