Chinese networking and telecommunications company Huawei will spend nearly HUF 10 bln to develop Hungary's broadband network, while plans are also in place to expand its regional innovation center, Hungarian news agency MTI cited company officials as saying.

Huawei will lay approximately 1,000 km of optical cable, which will supply broadband internet to roughly 140,000 homes in Hungary, Huawei Technologies Hungary's outgoing managing director Bin Yun Song said. Huawei has invested €200 mln in Hungary in the past decade, he added.

The company has partnered with local businesses Vodafone, for whom it is delivering a 4G mobile network, and Magyar Telekom to supply its IP-TV technology and network. Huawei will expand regional functions at its base just outside of Budapest, in addition to existing production and logistics activities. The center will handle returns, parts supply and service for all of Europe.

Officials in the US, UK, India, Canada and Austrialia have reportedly raised concerns about Huawei's security, including making charges that the company assists the Chinese government in spying on its customers – charges the company denies.
