After Donetsk closure, Wizz Air opens new Riga base

Transport

Hungary-based budget airline Wizz Air will open a base in Riga on June 19, with a new Airbus-320 aircraft, according to reports from Ukrainian media. Russian-language website Delo.ua reported that Wizz will introduce flights from the Latvian capital to Barcelona, Sheffield, Dortmund and Paris, four new destinations offered by the airline from Riga.

Wizz Air will increase the frequency of its London flights to eight per week and its Oslo flights to three per week from the airport, bringing the total numbers to 25 flights weekly to eight destinations.

Presumably, the new flights symbolize something of a shift in resources for Wizz, as this month saw closure of the airline’s Donetsk base – which had been scheduled for an expansion in flight offerings as of April 30 – due to the ongoing tension in East Ukraine, and postponement of introducing six new flights from Lviv weekly.
