Sziget Festival draws more than 490,000 visitors

Budapestʼs Sziget Festival, a week-long musical extravaganza on an island in the Danube, drew more than 490,000 visitors this year, a new record, chief organizer Károly Gerendai told Hungarian news agency MTI late yesterday as the event wound up. Although final figures are not yet available, the number well exceeds last yearʼs 441,000 visitors.

“The 490,000 we estimate is well over our expectations for 450,000-460,000 visitors. Week-long passes were sold out before the festival and day passes sold out on August 11, when Rihanna performed. It looks like interest for the Sziget was stronger than expected: day pass sales were much better than we thought, and we had favorable weather, too. The festival could generate several hundred million forints of profit,” Gerendai said.
