Referendum initiated against 2024 Olympics in Budapest
A referendum is currently being initiated against Budapest bidding for the 2024 Olympic Games, with the support of opposition parties LMP and Jobbik, while ruling Fidesz says it is too late to ask the opinion of voters, Hungarian online daily origo.hu reported.
Antal Csárdi of LMP told the daily that his party sees the issue of the Olympic Games as a topic on which voters must be consulted, and his party “clearly” supports the “NO - Népszavazást az Olimpiáról” initiative, which translates as “Referendum on the Olympic Games”.
Katalin Erdélyi, one of the organizers of the initiative, said they do not agree with governing politicians making this decision on their own, the paper reported. He said that since it is an “awful lot of money”, precisely HUF 800 billion, citizens need to be involved in the decision.
If Budapest’s Voting Committee approves the initiative, organizers need to collect 140,000 signatures supporting their initiative for the referendum to be held.
The International Olympic Committee reported in mid-September that Budapest will compete against Hamburg, Los Angeles, Paris and Rome to host the 2024 Olympic Games.
