To voice their discontent regarding the growing number of demonstrations being staged by Hungarian taxis drivers in the capital, nearly 5,000 Hungarians have signed up for a Facebook event to boycott taxis on June 1, as a counter-protest.

“Weʼve had enough of the constant taxi demos”, the description of the event says, adding that “on this day, we, the average person will demonstrate against taxi drivers”.

The organizers of the event say that by boycotting taxis for one day, Hungarian citizens can communicate to taxi drivers that they have had enough of “high fares, cheeky attitudes and conning behavior”, the page reads.

Hungarian taxi drivers have demonstrated more than half a dozen times in Budapest this year alone against ride-sharing services, which they claim operate unlawfully. The Hungarian government, apparently affected by the taxi driverʼs demonstrations, will discuss a bill next week that could ban the operations of ride-sharing services such as Uber in Hungary.

SUPPORT THE BUDAPEST BUSINESS JOURNAL

Producing journalism that is worthy of the name is a costly business. For 27 years, the publishers, editors and reporters of the Budapest Business Journal have striven to bring you business news that works, information that you can trust, that is factual, accurate and presented without fear or favor.
Newspaper organizations across the globe have struggled to find a business model that allows them to continue to excel, without compromising their ability to perform. Most recently, some have experimented with the idea of involving their most important stakeholders, their readers.
We would like to offer that same opportunity to our readers. We would like to invite you to help us deliver the quality business journalism you require. Hit our Support the BBJ button and you can choose the how much and how often you send us your contributions.
