Mayor: City government can’t pay for transport

Visits

The agglomeration of Budapest needs to discuss financing of public transportation with the state government as the capitalʼs municipal government is no longer able to cover the cost of transport, Mayor István Tarlós said today at a press conference, according to reports.

He said that negotiations on this issue with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán yesterday were not successful, and he reiterated opposition to an amendment passed last week that creates a HUF 20.7 bln deficit in Budapest’s budget.

In this situation, the mayor said, he is forced to pull funding for transport.

Tarlós (pictured) added that negotiations between himself and the prime minister are expected to continue in January.
