Lázár: Budapest could be separated from Pest county

Parliament

The Hungarian government is planning to separate the capital Budapest from Pest county, as the county ranks above the EU average in terms of development due to the capital’s performance, making it ineligible to receive EU funds, Cabinet Chief János Lázár said yesterday at his weekly press conference.

The cabinet chief said that separating the capital from the less developed county would make the latter eligible for European Union funding. Lázár said a decision on the matter would be made in the first half of 2016 at the latest, and the separation could occur as early as 2018.
