Healthy trees to be spared the axe in City Park
No more healthy trees will be cut down in Budapest’s City Park during the renovations taking place in the area; instead, they are to be relocated, Attila Sághi, the mechanical director responsible for the renovations, told Hungarian daily Lokál.
Following recent protests by environmental activists in the area, Sághi said, “If protesters are really concerned about trees being cut down, they have gained a victory, as their wishes are now being acted upon.”
Sághi said that only 150-200 trees out of the more than 7,000 in City Park were affected by the renovations, and as these trees were “neither old nor valuable”, it had been planned to fell them. However, after protests in the park it was decided to relocate the trees. A public procurement tender will be called for the operation.
