Government agrees to help Budapest pay cost of buses

Apparently fulfilling the ultimatum of Budapest Mayor István Tarlós, the Hungarian government said it would cover the additional cost of contracting replacement bus services while the M3 Metro undergoes renovation, according to a resolution published in the official gazette Magyar Közlöny.

The move seems designed to prevent Budapest from buying Solaris Polish-made buses, so that it will eventually buy Hungarian-made evopro buses instead.

Tarlós had said that if the government did not agree to help cover the cost of replacement bus service while the Metro line is out of service, the Budapest Municipal Council would purchase Solaris buses to run along the line. The government has said that, if Budapest adds to its bus fleet, it should purchase Hungarian-made evopro buses.

“The government considers it important that priority considerations of national economy and industrial policy be validated in the case of production of replacement buses for the M3 metro and the related purchase of service,” the resolution said, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.

The resolution specifies that 150 replacement buses will be provided, in line with the requirement set earlier by Budapestʼs local council, MTI added. For the short term, the buses may have to be rented, as it is not clear that evopro can produce that many new buses before the M3 work begins.
