Budapest transport company to lay off 111

Budapest transport company BKV is planning to lay off 111 of its employees as of the beginning of next year, Hungarian online daily nol.hu reported today, though no official announcement has been made on the matter by BKV.
According to nol.hu, BKV CEO Tibor Bolla announced the layoffs at a committee meeting today. Bolla noted that layoffs have been included in the business plan for this year.
Although four of the positions to be made redundant include the directorate of operations, the majority, 97 positions, are from the maintenance departments, nol.hu said.
According to the daily, Bolla said that the layoffs are needed as there has been a drop in performance on bus lines. However, Gábor Nemes, President of Trade Union for Unified Transportation, warned that although performance may have decreased, when renovations are launched on Metro line 3, performance will grow three-fold. Nemes added that BKV is buying 185 new buses, and with the arrival of the cold season, maintenance works will soon increase.
