BP council gives government ultimatum on metro renovation

The General Assembly of Budapestʼs Municipal Council decided to contract bus services to replace metros during the renovation of line three, on the condition that the Hungarian government cover the cost of acquiring the necessary buses, according to a report published by Hungarian news agency MTI today.

The ultimatum the municipal council reportedly gave states that the Hungarian government has until July 5 to issue the terms of support in the official gazette Magyar Közlöny. In light of the decision, the Budapest Public Transport Centre (BKK) will launch a public procurement procedure for the bus service, MTI added.
According to reports, the general assembly decided that if the government does not reach a decision on the matter by the deadline, Budapest will purchase Solaris buses, manufactured in Poland.
Budapest Mayor István Tarlos told the council that due to the delay in organizing the replacement buses for the line, the renovation will most likely also be delayed by several months, MTI reported. Originally, the project was set to start in November and be wound up by the summer of 2019.
The council’s decision to purchase the Polish-made Solaris buses was put on hold in May, following the governmentʼs decision to implement a national strategy for bus production, according to reports.
