Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, the head of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) Julio C. Maglione, and Budapest mayor István Tarlos laid the cornerstone of the Dagály Swimming complex located in the north of Budapest on Friday, Hungarian news agency MTI reported.

The complex will serve as the main venue for the World Aquatics Championships in 2017 which Hungary will host in 2017. It is able to seat 18,000 spectators and will be completed by the end of March, 2017.

The event was originally to be held in Guadalajara in Mexico but the city pulled out in February for financial reasons. Hungary was granted the opportunity to host the event the following month. The 2016 budget bill has set aside HUF 27.3 bln for developments necessary to host the championships.
