Falus quits BP mayoral race, backs Bokros
Leftist candidate for Budapes mayor Ferenc Falus announced that he quit the elections in favor of conservative Lajos Bokros, the mayoral candidate of the conservative Movement for a Modern Hungary (MoMa).
Viktor Szigetvári, co-leader of the Együtt party, and Ferenc Gyurcsány, DK’s leader, – the earlier supporters of Falus – pledged support for Bokros. Socalist party menbers said that “if the Socialists want to stay faithful to their principles, they cannot support a politician who identifies with the right”.
According to co-leader of green party LMP, András Schiffer, it is “ridiculous” that parties of the left should support Bokros, who “spent five years in a Eurosceptic and conservative group of the European Parliament”.
Fidesz MP Lajos Kósa called the step “farcical”, and using a metaphor said that “the whole team [the leftist parties] would be sent off” if the election were a sports match. Reflecting on Bokros, he compared the candidate to the every flavor jelly beans in Harry Potter, saying that “you cannot tell in advance whether he would taste like strawberries or bad eggs”.
