Gov't steps up SUP alternatives subs application processing

The government is processing applications for HUF 10 billion in subsidies to support the local production of alternatives to single-use plastic products (SUPs) in an expedited procedure, Finance Minister Mihály Varga said in a message on Facebook on Wednesday.
Varga said decisions on applications for some HUF 4 bln in subsidies have already been taken.
Hungary has banned a number of SUPs, including eating utensils, plates and straws, as well as expanded polystyrene foam food containers and cups, from July 1.
"The goal is to produce locally as much of the replacements for those products used in Hungary as possible," Varga said.
"That's why we're helping Hungarian companies with the green transformation with a tender for HUF 10 bln in subsidies," he added.
Companies may apply for European Union and government funding of between HUF 20 million and HUF 400 million to upgrade production technology or expand capacity to support the changeover to environmentally-friendly alternatives to SUPs.
