Budapest Leaders Unveil Plans to Scale Back Traffic on Thoroughfares

Budapest city leaders unveiled plans on Friday to reduce motorized traffic on some of the city's main thoroughfares and make them more pedestrian- and bike-friendly, according to a report by state news wire MTI.
Mayor Gergely Karácsony said changes would be made to Váci, Bajcsy-Zsilinszky, and Üllői út with the aim of replacing "metropolitan motorways" with "revitalized boulevards". The changes are expected to be completed, with the support of European Union funding, by 2030, he added.
He said new pedestrian crossings would allow people to walk across thoroughfares, rather than have to use underpasses, while bus lanes would be turned into cycle paths. He added that "unsightly, unnecessary" overpasses at Nyugati tér and Népliget would be demolished after 2026.
Karácsony said the changes could "restore the glory" of the capital as a "meeting place for people, not a convergence of highways".
