A painting by Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka (1853-1919) fetched a record price for a work sold at a Hungarian art auction on Sunday, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

A buyer paid HUF 460 million - about EUR 1.25 mln - for "Secret Island" at an auction organized by Budapest's Judit Virág Gallery.

The painting, from 1903, is one of only around a dozen of the some hundred works Csontváry produced that is privately owned.

The previous record price paid for a painting at a Hungarian auction was for another Csontváry work which fetched HUF 240 million in 2012.
