Ipsos: Fidesz lead in 2014 election steady

Party Popularity

Low voter turnout in Hungary’s parliamentary election of 2010 will likely not be duplicated four years later; an August poll undertaken by Ipsos shows that 44% of eligible voters are interested in voting, an increase from the 38% of last month and indicating a general downturn in electorate apathy.

The survey also showed that right about 50% would prefer a change of government, and 65% of respondents opined that the country is “going in the wrong direction.”

Ipsos also reported on voters’ party preference: Results here showed Fidesz at 24%, MSzP at 15%, Jobbik at 8%, Together 2014-Dialogue for Hungary (E14-PM) at 4%, LMP at 2%, the Democratic Coalition (DK) at 1%, and voters opting for other/undecided at 46%. Among decided voters, the breakdown is Fidesz 49%, MSzP 26%, Jobbik 12%, E14-PM 6%, LMP 3%, DK 2% and other parties/independents garnering around 1%.

Aside from the voter participation numbers, Ipsos noted stability for most poll statistics over the past half-year or so. As compared with polling results released by research institute Nézőpont about one week ago, the majority of party support numbers stay closely within the error margin.
