Spar Hungary is reducing the amount of plastic used in its logistics area by 84 tonnes per year thanks to the use of new packaging materials. The company is also steadily increasing the number of its products made from biodegradable, compostable raw materials and recyclable plastics, according to a press release sent to the Budapest Business Journal.

"One of the most important areas of Spar Hungary's sustainability program is protecting the environment. This ranges from environmentally conscious corporate governance, reducing emissions, modern waste management, and the use of modern packaging technologies," says Márk Maczelka, head of communications at Spar Hungary.

"We are therefore reducing the amount of plastic used in our production and logistics operations in several stages. In 2022, we will use 13.5 tonnes less plastic for the packaging of Regnum meat trays. And now we have made a change in logistics: by introducing a thinner pallet packaging film, 84 tonnes less plastic was used last year," he adds.

As part of its sustainability strategy, Spar Hungary is expanding its range of products that support environmental sustainability: more and more of the products it sells are made from recycled raw materials, biodegradable and natural materials, including sugar cane, wood, and paper.

In addition, the range of recyclable plastic products such as cups, cutlery, plates, and silicone lids has grown.

On May 19, the company withdrew pure plastic packaging from its bakery departments and switched to bags made largely from paper.
