Farm Ministry Official Calls for Increasing Soy Production

State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture Sándor Farkas called for increasing Hungary's soybean production at an event of the Soybean Roadshow of agribusiness "Margitta-Sziget '92" and the Hungarian Soybean and Protein Crop Association on Tuesday, according to a report by state news wire MTI.
In recent years, Hungarian soybean producers typically harvested 160,000-180,000 tonnes of produce from 60,000-70,000 hectares, the Ministry of Agriculture said.
Thanks to area-based subsidies earmarked for protein crops, the sowing area of soybeans in Hungary rose to 77,000 hectares in 2015 from the earlier 40,000 hectares, but it fell to just 58,000 hectares this year, the state secretary said.
It would be very important to increase production as domestic soybean cultivation only covers 15-20% of the country's demand, Farkas said.
