Some 20 foldable containers that can be used as temporary accommodation were delivered to Hawaii by cargo plane from an airbase in Pápa (140 km southwest of Budapest) on Saturday, according to the conservative daily Magyar Nemzet [Hungarian Nation].

Wildfires broke out on the Hawaiian island of Maui last Tueday, quickly reaching inhabited areas due to the dry scrub and strong winds, destroying most of the Lahaina, the former capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii, and killing over 100 people.

Parliamentary state secretary at the Ministry of Defense Tamás Vargha expressed his sadness at the loss of life, adding that many survivors had lost their homes in the fire.

Vargha said that Hungary's Continest had received an order for 250 containers, outfitted with toilets and kitchenettes, to provide temporary accommodation to those now without shelter.

A Hungarian C17 cargo plane set off for the Hawaiian Islands on Saturday with the first twenty, he said.
