Number of Counterfeit Euro Banknotes Withdrawn From Circulation up in 2022

Last year, 376,000 counterfeit euro banknotes were withdrawn from circulation worldwide, an 8.4% increase from 2021, the European Central Bank reported.
EUR 20 and EUR 50 notes continued to be the most counterfeited banknotes, together accounting for slightly below two-thirds of the total.
Some 96.6% of the counterfeits were found in euro area countries, while 2.7% were found in non-euro area EU member states and 0.7% in other parts of the world.
At the same time, the bank assures that the probability of getting a counterfeit banknote is low, as the number of counterfeit bills remains very low compared to the number of genuine bills in circulation.
