Navracsics: Foundation Uni Boards to be Addressed in March

Amendments to legislation addressing concerns aired by the European Commission over the boards of trustees of foundation universities in Hungary are expected to be approved by lawmakers in March, Minister of Regional Development Tibor Navracsics said after meeting with commissioners in Brussels.
According to business daily Világgazdaság, Navracsics said the talks with Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Mariya Gabriel and Commissioner for Budget and Administration Johannes Hahn were held to "seek compromise."
The sides agreed that the European Union's Erasmus+ scholarship scheme and Horizon Europe research programs are "not under threat" for some 180,000 students at foundation universities in Hungary, he added.
Navracsics noted that the EC has indicated that seats held for indefinite periods by politicians on the boards of trustees of foundation universities is a problem.
He added that changing the situation is "no obstacle" for the government and will require two "not too complicated" amendments. At the same time, he said the EC must make clear that cooperation will continue without interruption.
