Hungary Closes Technical Talks on Judicial Commitments, Varga Says

After clearing up political issues, Hungary has wound up technical negotiations with the European Commission on judicial commitments, Justice Minister Judit Varga told MTI in Brussels on Monday.
Varga said European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders confirmed the close of the talks, adding that now only the approval of the College of Commissioners is required.
She said a "very important station" had been reached in the process of accessing Hungary's European Union funding and acknowledged the cooperation and work of legal experts, judges associations, and interest protection groups over many months to advance to that stage.
EU funding for Hungary has been suspended until the country implements remedial measures addressing concerns over the rule of law.
Varga said she did not expect the EC to present any new conditions to Hungary, but added that the EU's executive is under "political pressure" from the European Parliament.
Addressing decisions by 15 EU member states to join a suit against Hungary at the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) over legislation codifying parents' rights over their children's sexual education, Varga noted that countries such as Italy had not joined the suit as third parties.
